Think About Using Powder Coating

If you have put a lot of time and energy into restoring your classic car, you want to make sure that the finished product looks beautiful. That means when it comes to finishing the car, you are going to have to figure out if you want it painted or powder coated. It can be hard for you to figure out which one you want to go with. Most people are familiar with painting, but not everyone is familiar with what powder coating is.

Powder Coating

Powder coating is generally made up of powdered thermoplastics or a powdered thermoset polymer. It is applied to the piece of metal and is then set under heat. It is applied in a powder form and is applied electrostatically. The way that happens is that the piece of metal is grounded or has a mild negative charge run through it. The powder is sprayed out at the piece of metal. As the powder leaves the nozzle, it gets a weak positive charge. That makes the powder and the metal really attracted to each other, and the powder just sucks onto the metal and doesn't want to let go. There are a lot of reasons to use powder coating when you are finishing your car.

Reasons

One reason to use powder coating is that you are going to get a nice, even finish. That's because of the way that the coating is applied. If too much of the powder goes to one place, the coating that is already there will actually repel it since they will all be positively charged. Another reason is that you are going to get a very durable finish. Powder coating tends to be much tougher than paint is, so you don't have to worry about things like scratches nearly as much. Powder coating is also less wasteful. When it gets sprayed, there isn't all that much overspray because of the electrostatic installation. What overspray does happen can be recycled and used again, so there is very little product that doesn't actually get used.

If you are trying to figure out what kind of finish you want to put on the classic car that you worked so hard to restore, you may want to consider thinking about using powder coating. You can get all kinds of colors, so you aren't going to be limited that way, and you are going to end up with a solid, durable, attractive finish.
